Out 21st October, “Grime” is the second single to be released from Roll Deep MC Flowdan’s phenomenal album ‘Disaster Piece’ which dropped on Tru Thoughts in July. The single also highlights the deeper “Groundhog feat. Animai” alongside two new remixes of the colossal first single – “Horror Show Style” from Shades and Telemachus.
“Grime” is a raw, uncut grime tune with a dancehall vibe and up-tempo drum pattern produced by Dexplicit. Its title is a self-referential emblem and celebration of how far the scene has come. Retrospectively, Flowdan explains: “Grime is a perfect representation of that whole ethos and whole energy there, and if Wiley had accepted a lot of the things he was handed we wouldn’t have ever had grime”. Unearthing a deeper side to the project, “Groundhog feat. Animai” grips the listener with a captivating narrative and bassline like a beating heart. The lyrics are about the choices we have in life, and follow the story of a young person unable learn from their mistakes. Polish producer Echo Deal apply a calm, dub infused beat to create a tense atmosphere for Animai’s haunting vocals and Flowdan’s unforgiving admonition.
Shades, the collaborative project of bass and dance music stalwarts’ Alix Perez and Eprom (Alix Depauw and Alexander Dennis) have brought their signature hard, classy swagger to their remix of “Horror Show Style”. Crisp drums and deep bass beautifully complement Flowdan's rhymes to create the perfect synergy of grime and bass music. Shades achievements can be charted via a string of reviews in XLR8R, RA and FACT, and their individual projects have seen release though labels like Shogun Audio and Exit Records and tastemaker support from Gaslamp Killer and Toddla T.
UK Producer Telemachus’ (aka Chemo) treatment of “Horror Show Style” uses mountaintop bongos to gently caress Flowdan’s fervent commands which are met by a pulsating barrage of 70hz and a broken Wurlitzer. His outstanding hip hop and UK rap releases on YNR Productions and Kilimanjaro Music have been highly favoured by The Guardian, Q Magazine, Bonafide and The Quietus. Telemachus has worked on projects with rappers such as Jehst, Kyza, Roots Manuva and dance music producer Calvin Harris.

But there’s also an increasing universality in its subject matter and themes, and a playfulness … Continue reading Album of the Week: The Surgery EP → Bandcamp Album of the Day Dec 5, 2011
